Raluca Ada Popa is a young Romanian computer science expert, born in Sibiu. She studied Computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was a postdoctoral researcher at ETA Zurich (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology) which provides pioneering solutions to the global challenges of today and tomorrow. She was awarded the Best Ph.D. Thesis and the award for the Best Young Professor She worked for Microsoft and now she is an associate professor at UC Berkeley, where she teaches doctoral courses. Raluca is a brilliant expert in crypto-security and data security, after being declared the world’s best computer science student (CRA Outstanding Undergraduate Award). She was on the list of outstanding young people under the age of 35 – MIT Technology Review „35 under 35“ and she was the winner of the 2021 Grace Murray Hopper Award for her work on secure distributed systems
Raluca is also an entrepreneur, president and Co-founder at Opaque Systems and co-founder at PreVeil – two companies that offer data protection services: a confidential cloud service, in which customers are protected by information by an encryption mechanism, but also another that is also based on security, but does not make calculations on confidential data but protects e-mails, documents and company websites.
Her data protection programs are also used by the US Department of Defense and can identify people involved in money laundering and human trafficking. The young computer scientist has found the solution to one of the biggest challenges in cyber security: securing computer data systems without firewalls to keep hackers away.
One of her two companies is in Boston, Pre-Vail, founded in 2017, and the other, Opaque Systems, is established in San Francisco in 2021. She intends to expand in Romania as crypto security and data security became essential issues in the digital world. She practically reinvented cyber-security fundamentals.
This very competent woman in the IT industry is often mistaken for famous models – her longline silhouette, angelic face, and elegance of her outfits make her an exotic presence in the cyber security industry. Her clients are from the world’s leading industries – banks, hospitals, the US Department of Defense.
